Poghos Hovhannisyan established a fruit drying facility in Byurakan and produces dried fruits for about 4 years. The fruit drying workshop located on the outskirts of the village is named "Dried fruit house".
At the entrance with wooden gates many fruit trees are grown (mainly apple and plum trees). On an orchard walk way you can find a wooden gazebo built in the middle of the orchard. As Poghos stated, one of their primary goals is not only dried fruits production but also an opprtunity for those to become a branch of alternative tourism. Tourists may visit ''Dried fruit house'' and participate in production, namely in strawberry harvesting, fruit stone removal, slicing, fruit sujukh preparation, etc. The fruit drying facility is a business model with the employees involved in the working process. The fruit is mainly bought from fellow villagers or small farmers.
Plums, peaches, apricots, cherries are dried within four months. Dried fruits are consumed primarily in Armenia and exported to the Russian Federation. The tourists visiting the "Dried fruit house'' also can have the fruits to go.
The fruits are dried in the sun and through obsidian stones, which retain heat for as long as possible.
''It is important to note that we are able to have an income and support our fellow villagers at the same time", says Poghos Hovhannisyan.
They grow and dry strawberries all year round using organic fertilizers. The organic certification will be obtained soon.
They also cultivate oyster mushrooms. Tonratun is under construction where the visitors can enjoy mushrooming, eating lavash or gata, and participating in the master classes of making ghapama.
In cooperation with the ''Himq'' NGO, they support the women of Byurakan in making and marketing soaps.
